Our profile this week is Dan, a student in Year 11 who has been with the school since 2016. Below Dan gives us an introduction to himself including his hobbies and interests:
Hi my name is Dan, I am 15 years old and in Year 11.
I am very sporty and spend all of my free time training hard or competing in various sports such as golf, football, rugby, volleyball and swimming. I always strive to be the best that I can be.
My favourite sport of all is gymnastics and I aim to raise the profile of Men’s Gymnastics here in the UAE. At five years old I was spotted by my gym coach to pursue an elite gymnastic training programme and trained up to 26 hours a week. I competed at the very highest level and my greatest achievement was competing in the Emirates Arena in Scotland, where I was placed 5th in the UK on the pommel.
Last year I fractured a vertebra in my spine and had to stop training for 11 months. After much rest and some physiotherapy I was able to return to gymnastics in May this year and now train up in Dubai three days a week. I have recently been picked to travel to Serbia in December to represent Dubai and the UAE in an International Club Competition, where I will be competing against other gymnasts from Russia, the UK, the USA, South Africa and other major countries around the world. It is a great opportunity for me to continue my ambition, being the best gymnast I can possibly be. My moto: Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard!
I hope to become a sports physiotherapist or gymnastic coach, although I had such a great work experience in the PE department at BIS Abu Dhabi, I could also become a PE teacher. I would like to thank the PE teachers for always encouraging us to do our very best in whatever sport we are taking part in.
The BIS Abu Dhabi moto is a great motivator too: Be Ambitious! You never know unless you go for it!
