This year, we will continue to share staff profiles to get to know members of our school family a little better. Each week we will feature a member of staff across all areas of the school including teachers, admin staff, support staff and more. This week we focus on Sara Brazier, Head of English.
BIS Abu Dhabi was my first international posting back in 2014. I had originally accepted a job in Uganda which unfortunately for me at the time, but very fortunately for me in hindsight, fell through. As a result, I found myself applying for a job in a place called Abu Dhabi that I had heard was near Dubai. I had the interview and accepted the job in late May and was on a plane in August! It was a very exciting time, but I was also very aware of the fact I was moving to a place I had barely even heard of, let alone travelled to! I didn’t let that stop me though - and 5 years later I can say without a shadow of a doubt it was the best decision I could have made. During the past five years, I have made lots of friends and managed to travel to many different places. Not to mention the opportunities BIS Abu Dhabi has offered me in terms of my career as well as the fantastic practitioners I have had the pleasure of working with and learning from during my time here.
Before moving to Abu Dhabi, I worked at a school in a seaside town in Essex. It was a challenging school, but one that taught me a lot about how to manage children with different needs and abilities. It was also where I met and became very good friends with Mrs Grange (at the time, Miss Williams) who has since joined the English department at BIS Abu Dhabi.
Since living in Abu Dhabi, I have met and married my husband (who is from Scotland). Recently, we adopted a beagle who we named Clootie Dumpling (after a popular Scottish pudding!). We have had great fun introducing her to the beach, and taking part in various activities with her and other dog owners in the area. We even bought her a life jacket so we can take her out kayaking, though this is something I’m not sure she is as fond of as we are!
The UAE has been a great place for me to live and work. There’s not really anything here that is quite like going back to Essex and walking along the beach in the bitter cold of winter, followed by getting warm again by the fire with a cup of tea, but there is plenty that comes a very close second, if not joint first!
