This year, we will continue to share staff profiles to get to know members of our school family a little better. Each week we will feature a member of staff across all areas of the school including teachers, admin staff, support staff and more.
Our profile this week is Patrick O'Neill, who this year moved from teaching in Primary School to Secondary School as Head of Extended Learning. Below Patrick gives us a snapshot into his background and how he came to work at BIS:
It seems like a lifetime ago I began here at BIS Abu Dhabi and I am now about to commence my 8th academic year. Having taught for a number of years in London, it was my wife who first suggested we come to the UAE and we haven't looked back since. Initially beginning as a teacher, I graduated to Primary Head of Year before becoming Assistant Headteacher for Student Wellbeing 3 years ago.
This year will see a change to my role within the school as I move into a new role as Head of Extended Learning. This will give me my first experience of teaching in Year 7 and the chance to look at transitioning from KS2 to KS3 to ensure a smooth passage for our Primary students when moving onto Secondary life. In addition to this, I will also oversee House, Service and the BIS Abu Dhabi Diploma teams and, as Trip coordinator, ensure we are getting the most out of our out-of-school opportunities.
Away from school, I enjoy numerous sports and support the mighty Coventry City. I like to take part in the numerous triathlons the UAE has to offer and, time permitting, like to get out on the golf course once in a while which with a 2 year old daughter at home is proving more and more tricky to accomplish! Travel and music are also passions of mine and as a family we try to see as much as we can of Asia and beyond during the holidays.
The amount of change I have witnessed at the school and been part of, along with the strong friendships I have made with colleagues, students and parents has made the school more than just a place of work and l am looking forward to helping improve the school further as we approach the school's 10 year anniversary.
Time flies when you're having fun...
