This year, we will continue to share staff profiles to get to know members of our school family a little better. Each week we will feature a member of staff across all areas of the school including teachers, admin staff, support staff and more.
Our profile this week is Martyn, our Operations Manager. Below Martyn gives us a snapshot into his background and how he came to work at BIS:
Growing up surrounded by green grass and sheep, I could have never imagined I would end up here in the hot desert of Abu Dhabi. After getting married this year in March, Rachel and I decided that we wanted an extraordinary life filled with adventure. This meant leaving the comfort of New Zealand and exploring new opportunities overseas.
Rachel was offered a role as a Year 1 teacher at BIS Abu Dhabi and I was fortunate enough to be offered the role of Operations Manager, which worked out to be a much better use of my skills than that of a house-husband.
This role would be a great opportunity to use my past experience working for New Zealand’s largest employer (Fonterra) in procurement and supply roles, and to further develop my skills by managing such a large and diverse team.
I look forward to all the challenges each day brings me, whether it be planning new areas for children to learn and play in around our school, to ensuring that our classrooms are clean and furnished, and the buses arrive on time.
The first few months of living in Abu Dhabi were a blur of experiences and emotions; being amazed by the stunning mosque, very confused in the basement of Al Wahda Mall after losing my car, in awe of the view from the Burj Khalifa and perplexed by the number of hazard lights and lack of indicating on the roads.
Three months on, living here still feels like a dream, but this place is definitely starting to feel like our new home. You will no doubt see me racing around the corridors of BIS Abu Dhabi each day, doing everything I can to ensure that learning and working at BIS Abu Dhabi is a safe, enjoyable experience. So feel free to stop me for chat about my former days playing for the greatest rugby team in the world, the All Blacks!
