As our school community grows, we will be sharing staff profiles to get to know members of our school family a little better. Each week we will feature a member of staff across all areas of the school including teachers, admin staff, support staff and more.
Our profile this week is Eric Déposé, French and Spanish Teacher - Head of Languages at our school. Below Eric gives us a snapshot into his background and how he came to work at BIS:
I was born and raised in a town called Pau in the South West of France at the bottom of the Pyrenees, an hour away from the ski slopes and from the beautiful beaches on the Atlantic coast. That’s probably why I have two passions: skiing and swimming.
I completed a degree in English Literature and Civilisation, followed by a Master’s degree in French as a Foreign Language, at the University of Pau in France. I then obtained my PGCE at Saint Martin’s College, Lancaster, UK.
Straight after my studies, I moved to Gran Canaria, Spain, to teach French, English and later Spanish in a couple of British international schools there and fell in love with not just the place... That is surely the best motivation to become fluent in a language! Raising a trilingual family might look a bit “loco” but it is great fun!
We left our beloved island after an old friend from secondary school called me from Abu Dhabi! We were up for a new challenge. We have now been here for 7 years and have enjoyed every bit of it so far. As a linguist, I am still hoping to learn Arabic and it is one of the items on my list. But our greatest opportunity here was to be immersed in a truly multicultural and diverse community changing us into this new human species they call “Global Citizens”!
Since I started at BIS Abu Dhabi I have been growing as a professional taking on the role as Head of department recently and getting out of my comfort zone, which is something that our school pushes every member of its community to do! It also provides an ideal environment for our children to grow and I enjoy sharing my love of languages with our amazing students.
What I enjoy the most now is spending as much time as I can with my family and friends and making the most of what the UAE has to offer.
