Staff Profile: Aislinn Downey

As our school community grows we will be sharing staff profiles to get to know members of our school family a little better. Each week we will feature a member of staff across all areas of the school including teachers, admin staff, support staff and more.

Our profile this week is Aislinn Downey, Year 1 Teacher. Below Aislinn gives us a snapshot into her background and how she came to work at BIS:

I was born and raised in a small village in the beautiful countryside of South Armagh in Ireland. I am the eldest of three girls and the first grandchild on both sides of my family. My father owns a butcher's and delicatessen in my local town which has been in my family for over one hundred years. When most teachers spend their winter break relaxing, I can usually be found working in the butcher's! Even though I grew up working in Dad’s shop, from a very young age, I knew I wanted to be a teacher.

I completed my degree at St Mary's University College, Belfast, where I studied Primary Education through the medium of Irish. Irish language, culture and sport have always been a huge part of my life, and as a world champion Irish dancer, I was delighted to have the opportunity share my love for Irish dancing through our school CCA program this year.

I have always had a passion for travelling, so after completing my degree, I decided to take a leap of faith and left the fresh air and green fields of Ireland for the sand dunes of Qatar. I worked as an FS2 teacher in an International school in Doha for 2 years before moving across the Gulf to Abu Dhabi and joining The British International School.

I'm now going into my 4th year teaching at BIS Abu Dhabi. I've gained experience teaching both FS1 and Year 1 and I am very much looking forward to my new role as Year 1 Year Leader next year. Working at BIS Abu Dhabi has provided me with so many amazing opportunities; from travelling to Tanzania with Year 10 and Year 12 this year, to working alongside colleagues, parents and students from all over the world. I absolutely love living and working in Abu Dhabi and having the pleasure of teaching so many energetic, curious and determined little people at BIS Abu Dhabi brings a smile to my face every day!
