Staff Profile: Abdul Mohamud

This year, we will continue to share staff profiles to get to know members of our school family a little better. Each week we will feature a member of staff across all areas of the school including teachers, admin staff, support staff and more. This week we focus on Abdul Mohamud, History Teacher.

Exactly one year ago, I set my mind to moving abroad and starting a new chapter in my life. Five months in and I wonder why I didn’t take the plunge sooner!

Growing up in the heart of London, one the world’s most diverse and cosmopolitan cities, I developed an interest in different cultures and societies. Naturally, this interest drew me towards the study of history and my passion for sharing these stories brought me into the classroom.

I spent several years in London schools before I made my next big leap, this time into the world of academia and for three years I worked in University College London’s Institute of Education, training new teachers as well as writing a book on the teaching of diverse histories. This role brought me into contact with educators from around the world and I was invited to work with other teachers in places as far afield as Charleston and Louisville in the USA, Augsburg in Germany and Pietermaritzburg in South Africa. My travels gave me a sense of professional fulfillment and I made lifelong friends along the way.

Abu Dhabi has exceeded my expectations in many ways, it is a far more interesting city than I had been led to believe. My personal highlight of the city has been visiting the Louvre, shortly before closing time, standing in quiet reflection around their impressive collections. Living in the UAE has also transformed my travel plans; suddenly places that were a grueling long-haul flight away can be reached in a few short hours. Last month I travelled across India, something I had wanted to do for many years. My next goal is to explore Central Asia, then visit every country conquered by Alexander the Great and in so doing reconnect with some of the stories that inspired me to study history in the first place.

BIS Abu Dhabi has given me the opportunity to work with some great teachers and curious, hard-working students and I look forward to many more happy years here.
