As our school community grows we will be sharing staff profiles to get to know members of our school family a little better. Each week we will feature a member of staff across all areas of the school including teachers, admin staff, support staff and more.
Our profile this week is Ryan Baker, Director of Sport. Below Ryan gives us a snapshot into his background and how he came to work at BIS:
My family and I moved to Abu Dhabi four years ago from Cheshire, England. After working for ten years as teachers in Manchester we were fed up with the grey skies and rain so decided to move to somewhere with a different climate, and Abu Dhabi is certainly different!
I feel lucky that throughout my life I have managed to have jobs that I have really enjoyed doing. The first one was professional football. From being with a team called Crewe Alexandra from the age of nine, I was lucky enough to play with and against the likes Michael Owen, Steven Gerrard, Wes Brown and Joe Cole to name a few. Even though I played a number of sports when I was younger, my commitments with football took up the majority of my time as I travelled around Europe participating in a variety of tournaments. Football also gave me the opportunity to represent England at under-18 level six times, and in futsal four times.
After leaving professional football I studied Sports Science at University which then led into teaching (second brilliant job). It was a job that I had always wanted to do. The fact that as PE teachers we get to witness students daily, enjoy sport, grow in self-confidence, and develop resilience and character is amazing, and I feel privileged to be part of it.
The best job in the world though is being a Dad. I have two incredible sons that attend BIS Abu Dhabi. My boys love sport (especially football) and support Spurs (like me). I would like to think they chose this team by themselves...
