As our school community grows we will be sharing staff profiles to get to know members of our school family a little better. Each week we will feature a member of staff across all areas of the school including teachers, admin staff, support staff and more.
Our profile this week is Heather Threlfall, FS2 Year Leader. Below Heather gives us a snapshot into her background and how she came to work at BIS:
People always say they can’t quite place my accent when they talk to me but being born in Canada, growing up in Northern Ireland and spending 12 years living in England will do that to you! Being the youngest of 4 and coming from a large family has meant that there were always lots of tantrums and lots of noise in our house – just like my classroom now!
Ever since I was a little girl, I have always known that I wanted to follow in my mum and sister’s footsteps and become a teacher, so spent 4 years at University in Lancaster to pursue my dream job. I graduated in 2008, specialising in Early Childhood Education and secured my first job in Didsbury, Manchester. Within two years, I was part of the Senior Management team and not only enjoyed teaching and making a difference in the classroom, but also having an impact on the day to day running and leadership of the school. Whilst teaching both Reception and Year One, I also carried out consultancy work in other schools, helping them to improve teaching and learning in their school. Although I loved the busyness and fast paced way of life, I was ready for and relished the thought of a new challenge and spending more time in the classroom doing what I love best.
My husband and I had always talked about living abroad, so decided to take the plunge and move to Abu Dhabi in 2016. For the first year, I was a class teacher in FS2 here at BIS Abu Ddhabi and taught my lovely Panda class. It took a while to get used to moving from a school with 10 teachers in the whole school to BIS Abu Dhabi where there were 10 teachers in one year group. With the job brought lots of challenges as well as exciting opportunities. In my second year, I took on the role of FS2 Year Leader, leading a team of 12 classes. I love the fact that every day is completely different and throws new challenges at me, meaning I am always learning.
I am pleased to say that hand on heart, moving to Abu Dhabi and working at BIS Abu Dhabi has been the best decision for us. It has opened my eyes to a completely different culture, enabled us to travel to more of the world, tick off lots on our bucket list and most importantly, make some new friends for life.
