As our school community grows we will be sharing staff profiles to get to know members of our school family a little better. Each week we will feature a member of staff across all areas of the school including teachers, admin staff, support staff and more.
Our profile this week is Jack Butterworth, English and Drama teacher. Below Jack gives us a snapshot into his background and how he came to work at BIS:
This time last year, my wife and I were immersed in the Italian way of life. We were going skiing most weekends in the winter months, taking the subway to work and eating more pizza and pasta than was probably healthy. Fast forward 12 months, we are living in the desert, loving life in the Middle East and I’ve learned almost 5 words in Arabic!
I was born some 30 years ago in a town called Macclesfield, not too far from Manchester. I spent my childhood playing football, tennis, fishing and exploring the countryside. I left for the city of Liverpool at 18 to study Literature at University and through the odd weekend trip, I acquired a taste for travelling. Once I’d finished my studies, I set off on my travels, working in Indonesia and even learning the language!
My wife and I were teaching on the south coast of England when we went on a farming holiday to Verona in Italy. We loved it and ending up moving there for two years of la dolce vita!
These days, I spend my free time reading, playing golf and discovering my new surroundings. I’ve met some incredible people through BIS Abu Dhabi, both staff and students alike. I haven’t forgotten my roots though and there’s nothing better than getting back to rainy Macclesfield, putting a jumper on and having a nice cup of tea with my mum!
