As our school community grows we are pleased to introduce a new segment of the Weblog, staff profiles, which will be an opportunity to get to know members of our school family a little better. Each week we will feature a member of staff across all areas of the school including teachers, admin staff, support staff and more.
The inaugural staff profile is of Mr. Adam Stewart. Adam is the Examinations Officer at BIS Abu Dhabi and most people would be familiar with Adam's smiling face greeting them in the morning at the main reception. Below Adam gives us a snapshot into his background and how he came to work at BIS:
I was born in Glasgow, Scotland and my journey to Abu Dhabi has been quite an adventure. Since leaving school, a few decades ago, I have gathered a wealth of experience through different careers I have had. Never tiring of learning new skills, meeting new people and new challenges.
I trained as a nurse, survived fifteen years of service as an Officer in Glasgow Fire Service, ran my own business and I have worked with children with special needs in Scotland and here in Abu Dhabi. Of all roles I have had, none makes me prouder than being the grandfather to two (soon to be three) adorable grandchildren, father to three (adorable at one time) boys and ”wonderful” husband to my wife Catherine (BIS teacher in year 1).
When most people are thinking of retirement, we decided to take a massive leap and relocate to Abu Dhabi in 2010. Starting as a Teaching Assistant in BIS Abu Dhabi SEN department, I have continued my lifelong love of learning and taken on many different roles. Whether it is being the first face many see in the morning, or the last face they see before opening a GCSE paper, every day at BIS Abu Dhabi is a privilege.
In my younger days my passion was running, I represented the Glasgow Fire Service abroad and achieved a personal best in a Marathon of 2hours 48minutes (should have broken 2.45).
Nowadays, I spend more of my time as an armchair supporter enjoying all kinds of sport. I love cooking, reading and travelling.
With lots of the world left to discover, I plan to make the most of my time in Abu Dhabi. Having explored this beautiful country with the Duke of Edinburgh groups, travelled to Thailand, China, Australia, Singapore Hong Kong and Tanzania, I still have much to accomplish.
