IB Chemistry

Year 12 IB students had great fun modelling covalent structures using balloons as an analogy.

The shapes of covalent bonded molecular compounds can be modelled using balloons. The shapes are difficult for many learners to visualise.

Students were able to apply the VSPR theory which can be replicated by holding 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 balloons together:

2 Balloons – linear geometry
3 Balloons – trigonal planar geometry
4 Balloons – tetrahedral geometry
5 Balloons – trigonal bipyramidal geometry
6 Balloons – octahedral geometryIMG_1348 IMG_1345 IMG_1347
