On the weekend of the 18th /19th November, teams from all over the Middle East gathered in Zayed Sports City for what was the first BSME Netball Tournament of its kind. BIS Abu Dhabi entered two teams; one in the U13 tournament and the other in the U15 and made our way to the venue with high hopes. The U15 team were very successful on day 1 with 5 wins out of 6 including Brighton College and BSAK, leaving them in an excellent position for day 2. The U13 squad also had a very strong start to day 1 winning 3 out of their 6 opening games.
Day two began with wins for the U15 team against GEMS Abu Dhabi and Compass School Doha. This meant the U15 squad had won 7 out of 8 games with one left to play to decide on 1st / 2nd place or 3rd/4th. The British school Jeddah were the opposition in what proved to be an exhilarating game of netball. Our girls gave everything they could have and fell just short with a score line of 7-6. Our fate was 3rd / 4th playoff against Brighton College. Having already beaten Brighton College the day before we knew we were in for a tough battle which proved to be the case, this time Brighton came out on top in another great game. There were outstanding performances from everyone in the squad but a special mention must go to Leandri Van Heerdan who was nominated for player of the tournament.
U13 squad also had a great start to day 2, winning 2 out of their 3 games. After the group games we had a nervous wait to hear whether our points tally would be good enough to get us into 3rd / 4th place playoff. It did prove to be and we found ourselves facing BSAK. The girls again did everything that was asked of them and fought to the end but were narrowly beaten. Again some excellent performances from all the girls in particular, Captain Tamsin Sangster who was outstanding throughout.
Both squads represented the school so well throughout the weekend and they were a credit to their families. Most of our students will be eligible to play in the tournament again next year which makes for exciting times for netball in the school. Special thanks to all the parents and families who came to support, and to Mrs Harvey, Mrs Heptinstall – Lowe, Mrs Brown, Mrs Hook and Miss Carey for all their work over the weekend.
This season has been a hugely successful one in the ADISSA netball leagues and tournaments. The U12 netball team coached by Mrs Heptinstall – Lowe had an excellent league campaign, finishing 1st overall in the league and the end of season tournament, beating teams such as BSAK, Brighton, Yasmina and Cranleigh along the way.
Our U14 squad led by Mrs Harvey had another excellent season following on from last season and finished both the league and the tournament in second place, beating the eventual winners BSAK in the group stages.
The U16 teams had a good league campaign, beating al Bateen and Cambridge but they saved their best performances until the tournament, finishing 3rd overall – a big improvement on last year.
The U19 squad finished the year with great display of netball and a 4th place in the end of season tournament. For most of these girls it will be their final season playing netball for BIS Abu Dhabi. I just wanted to personally thank them for all their efforts over the last two seasons and wish them the best of luck for the future in all their endeavours.
A huge amount of time and effort goes in from the girls to attend training and matches but this would not happen without the help and support of number of people. I would also like to thank our coaches Mrs Harvey, Mrs Heptinstall – Lowe, Mrs Brown and Mrs Hook who have given a lot of time in ensuring the girls perform to the best of their ability. Parents – your support this year has been greatly appreciated both by us and the girls – we are looking forward to next season already!
